KAI, member of SM Entertainment boy groups EXO and SuperM, made us do a double-take in his latest video releases of “Mmmh” and “FILM : KAI”. In his first solo debut, he blew us away with stunning cinematography, memorable dance performances, and iconic outfits. We’d be crazy not to tell you all about it! Mmmh
This has to be the most recognizable ensemble from the “Mmmh” music video. Kai made the internet buzz with his Kimmy J jewel durag. This really steals the show—but even if the durag was removed, this is still a great outfit. Kai wears a blue sweater with burgundy trousers. This color pairing not only looks great on Kai but would be incredible on anyone!
Kai looks like a superhero in this Maison Margiela oversized long coat. This white and cream color-blocked design is unique—its stitching appears unfinished and looks as if it were just taken out of a tailor’s shop. He pairs ripped jeans to continue this thread. Black boots are perfect for his skyscraper lookout. This raw look is perfect for Kai and his wistful stares over the bright city below.
Kai owns the night in this monochromatic look. He wears a black satin dress shirt, which is unbuttoned to reveal a silver pendant necklace. He layers a leather sleeveless vest over top of the shirt for added dimension. This goes perfect with his leather pants, which are fitted at the top and extend into a loose cut at the bottom. He adds Rick Owens high-top sneakers to complete the look.
Kai’s style is so unique in this video, and this look is just as different as the rest. We love seeing the variety of styles and how each look amazing on Kai. He sports a black turtleneck from GmbH, which has a pair of slits on each arm. Above this, he wears a gold chain necklace. His white pants have a fringe that runs top to bottom, keeping up with the unfinished theme of his previous outfit. For shoes, he dons Moncler + Rick Owens chunky lace-up boots.
Kai uses the same black GmbH turtleneck for this look. He tucks his shirt into army green cargo pants, fitted with a cream colored belt. For shoes, he sports dark brown boots, which match his flat brim, panama style hat. For a mysterious aura, a mesh mask is added to the hat. To give some class to the look, he wears a pearl necklace along with several chunky silver chain necklaces. This color combination is easy to recreate and can easily find a home in your own wardrobe.
FILM : KAI
A high-class Kai dines with the wealthy as he sports an Alister Mackie necktie shirt in the short music video performance of his song "Reason" as part of "FILM : KAI". This piece has illustrative print, made from silk faille, and boasts a removable necktie. Kai layers a green, wool-crepe jacket from Casablanca over the top. This just screams high-class and Kai rocked it. He adds trousers and dress shoes in neutral tones to keep the focus on his torso. He wears a couple of golden rings to fit in with the elite.
In this outfit, also seen in the short music video performance of the song "Reason" as part of "FILM : KAI", Kai sports a 1017 A L Y X 9SM buckle hat, with a black knitted balaclava from the same brand. His cropped, striped pullover has a slit on his right arm. This resembles the Charles Jeffrey striped distressed sweater he wore in his live performance of “Tempo.” He layers thick golden chains which break up the black and white top. Light blue jeans and 1 Mid Equity Air Jordans complete the look.
We wouldn’t do the new release justice if we didn’t mention one of KAI’s shirtless looks, seen in his short music video performance of the song "Amnesia" as part of "FILM : KAI". Here he wears an unbuttoned, jeweled leather jacket and loose leather pants. A black leather Gucci belt with a silver double G buckle keeps in theme with the look. For jewelry, he adds a couple chunky necklaces, silver bracelets, and a thick silver ring. He finishes the outfit with black sneakers.
We’ve loved the diversity of hats that he has incorporated into the debut looks. His Marine Serre printed headscarf is no exception, seen in the short music video performance of the song "Mmmh" as part of "FILM : KAI". With a structured brim and handkerchief edges that drape down, this is a statement piece. This outfit is a combination of classy and cool. Kai hangs a long pearl necklace over a white dress shirt. His black and white checkered tie incorporates the colors from the hat into the outfit. To keep it casual, Kai adds a nylon blue jacket. And to keep it dress, black trousers and dress shoes are thrown into the mix. We love how Kai chose to mix-n-match.
It is not easy to rock red-on-red, but as per usual Kai is pushing boundaries and showing up that with confidence, any fashion look is possible! He wears a bellamy styled red shirt, complete with ruffles in the front, during the short music video performance of the song "Nothing On Me" as part of "FILM : KAI". His pants are very high waisted, incorporating a set of belt-like fastenings on the back. He chooses to only break up the color scheme with black dress shoes.
The incredible thing about “Mmmh” and “FILM: KAI” is not only the aesthetic of the videos themselves, but the wealth of style that was provided to viewers. KAI did not come to play games in his first solo mini album. He shows up that he is an artist to take seriously in his musical ability and his fashion sense.
